2/2/03: Here are the details regarding the final grade calculation.
Suppose your grades were:
h - homework (exercise 1).
m1 - midterm #1.
m2 - midterm #2.
e - exam.
Normalize exam grade:
n = 10 e1/2.
Calculate:
c1 = 0.15 if
m1 <=n and 0.2
otherwise.
c2 = 0.15 if
m2 <=n and 0.2
otherwise.
cn = 1 - c1
- c2 .
a = c1 m1 +
c2 m2 +
cn n.
The final grade is:
0.96 a + 0.04 h, if a >= 56,
a, otherwise.
For students who were exempted from midterm #1
calculate m1 and c1
above by:
m1 = 0.225 m2
+ 0.754 n.
c1 = 0.174.
For students who were exempted from midterm #2
calculate m2 and
c2 above by:
m2 = 0.278 m1
+ 0.838 n.
c2 = 0.182.

5/11/02: The following is an excerpt from a message received today
from the upper echelons: "In view of the severe budget cuts the
department can no longer pay for first degree students to check
homework assignments ... there will be a change in the way the
final grade is calculated. ... still give homework, ... but it will
not be corrected and it will not be part of the final grade."
In our course, this means there will be no more homework grading.
(Please do not submit assignment #2.) The final grade will be
determined by the midterms and the final exam.
