Natural Language Processing (201-2454101)
Assignment 6 - Spring 1999 - Yael Dahan Netzer

FUF and SURGE - Due to July 1

Resources for this assignment:

1. INPUTS for SURGE

Write inputs for the following sentences in English.
(Examples are taken from here and are accompanied with Blissymbolics - don't let it bother you - you have to write them with FUF!)
  1. The doctor will try to find answers.
  2. Children whose parents are in love can develop successfully.
  3. I will go with you if you are afraid.
  4. I believe what you say.
  5. Observe and measure that before analyzing.
  6. We need an expert in atomic fission to join this project.
  7. I wish I could find a book of poetry written in Semantography.
  8. After this people will elect better government.
  9. Who in government should judge whether to keep a secret from the people?

2. Grammar for Hebrew Noun Phrases

Write a FUF grammar for Hebrew noun phrases. The grammar should at least support the following aspects of the Hebrew noun phrase:
  1. Definite and indefinite.
  2. Adjective modifiers (sefer gadol)
  3. Prepositional phrase modifiers (ha sefer 'al ha shulhan)
  4. Determiners: cardinals, ordinals, harbe (many), col (all), ktsat (few).
  5. Possessive: ha sefer sheli, ha sefer shel yaakov.
Keep an input format similar to that of SURGE for English as much as possible. Your implementation will necessarily be very different from the one for English. You do not need to implement any specific morphology processing (gender and number agreement) in the linearizer.
